I started paying more attention to fashion photography while I was attending college for photography. No, not the lingerie section of the Sears or J. C. Penney catalogs, (okay, I did look at the lingerie section, but that’s not the story!)
It was the clothing section of the catalogs and high fashion magazines.
What always caught my eye was the women in odd contorted poses. It was supposed to catch everyone’s eye, right?
After college, I landed a fulltime position at a graphic design & commercial photography studio in Des Moines that specialized in catalogs. I was responsible for some of the fashion work. I don’t know if it was my lighting, technique, making a correct exposure on transparency film or what that drew me into fashion photography – but I liked it!
Why wouldn’t I want to be a fashion photographer?
Here are examples of some of my work at the studio.
These are my favorite photos from my days at the studio. There are many more photos I could show, but those were basic catalog or sales brochure photos. Those photos weren’t as glamorous. The above photos were my own lighting and creative input with the studios approval for the studio’s portfolio.
